The Lounge Companion Vol. 2: A Collection of Creative Writing
- The Amazing Release Bonanza!When? -- 11th June 2010, 8pm
Where? -- The Albion Beatnik Bookshop on Walton Street in Oxford's JerichoLion Lounge Press once again invaded Oxford's Jericho - generously hosted by good friend of the Lounge and all-round amazing bookshop, The Albion Beatnik - to celebrate the publication of its latest anthology, The Lounge Companion Vol. 2. The attendees included therein published poets George Chopping and Chris Roberts , who both read their work aloud for everyone's auditing pleasure. Among the other guests were publishers from a range of different corners of the UK, students - and a lecturer - from the Oxford Brookes MA programme in Publishing, as well as a host of eager readers, writers and minglers extraordinaires.
Once the dust had settled, we moved on, of course, for even more literary awesomeness to ensue!
If you missed it, tough luck. Well, at least you can sneak a peek at the pics below.
The Lion Lounge Duels: The Battle for Oxford
When? -- 15th December 2009, 7.30pm
Where? -- The Albion Beatnik Bookshop on Walton Street in Oxford's JerichoLion Lounge Press proudly presents the first of many Duels. The Albion Beatnik in Oxford graciously offered up its domain for the evening in question, and for this wondrous occasion metamorphed into a festive highbrow arena, a flaming creative writing colosseum of sophisticated pleasures, where three erudite writers were pitted against both each other and a Lion that was packing fancy words and a bundle of surprises, with nothing but a quill and their wits to defend themselves with.
An opening act to get everyone in the right mood was supplied by Oxonian poet and comic genius George Chopping, and the three individuals foolish enough to 'volunteer' for this ordeal were, in alphabetical order:
- Chris "South Chris" Rogers - brilliant writer, publishing professional at Oxford University Press, and composer of limericks.
- Chris "North Chris" Turner - archaeologist by day, and producer of the Oxford Imps, stand-up comedian, and current reigning Oxford University Poetry Slam Champion (!) by night.
- Felicity - an illustrious publishing professional based in London, who can recite the lyrics of any song ever written verbatim, and prefers to remain as un-googleable as possible.
Needless to say, things got bloody... Bloody marvellous, that is! As we had promised before the event, the audience both witnessed and partook in the crazed notions of the precocious love-child of an 18th century musket duel and a pub quiz, and in the end "South Chris" reigned supreme. Lion Lounge Press wishes to congratulate him on his award-winning performance, and thank all contestants, as well as the Albion Beatnik, for a truly amazing soirée!
Ensuing the first two rounds and the final duel, the party progressed next-door for cocktails at Sugar Brown. Click on the thumbnails below for a closer look. Film clips will also be uploaded asap.

The Lounge Companion: A Collection of European Creative Writing
- The Big Release Party!When? -- 11th August 2009
Where? -- The upstairs bar of The Phoenix Picture House in Oxford's JerichoLion Lounge Press hosted its very first release party, in part for its premier title — The Lounge Companion — but also in part for itself, catapulting its glorious self into the realm of indie publishing. Guests at the launch fest included publishing gurus from the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies (OICPS), students of Oxford Brookes' Publishing MA programme, and some general publishing brass. Furthermore, and much to the satisfaction of LLP, a handful of contributing writers graced the esteemed venue with their presence, and two of them even provided the rest of us with public readings of their poetry.
All in all, a bombastic hurrah of literary merriment! Click on the thumbnails below for a better glimpse of what it was like.
